Major General Peter Fuller, deputy commander of the NATO training mission in Afghanistan, was fired Friday by President Obama. General Fuller made several blunt remarks to Politico in response to what he felt were ill-advised remarks by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

General Peter Fuller

President Karzai reportedly said Afghanistan would ally with Pakistan if the United States and Pakistan went to war. This infuriated Gen. Fuller. The General reportedly remarked by calling:

Karzai’s statements “erratic,” adding, “Why don’t you just poke me in the eye with a needle! You’ve got to be kidding me … I’m sorry, we just gave you $11.6 billion and now you’re telling me, ‘I don’t really care’?”

Fuller further remarked:

“You can teach a man how to fish, or you can give them a fish,” Fuller said. “We’re giving them fish while they’re learning, and they want more fish! [They say,] ‘I like swordfish, how come you’re giving me cod?’ Guess what? Cod’s on the menu today.”

As I read the accounts of this latest firing of one of our military leaders, I am reminded of another time in Washington politics when one of our commanders was fired and another was almost fired!

During the Korean War, Truman fired General Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur wanted to use nukes during the Korean War. This caused  many to fear he would cause WWIII. MacArthur was a colorful, arrogant man in many ways. But, he was a brilliant military commander.

General Patton

But, like another great general, General George Patton, he was not blessed with the social graces of politics. Gen. Patton was never fired; but, he came very close on many occasions. Patton often found himself at odds with Eisenhower during WWII. Patton felt Eisenhower kowtowed to the British.
